Doodle map of nowhere in particular

Initial inspiration from Cann, H. 2017. Hand-drawn maps: a guide for creatives. London: Thames and Hudson. pp.84-87 - Dungeon maps.

I’m not mapping a dungeon, but using squared paper for the structure gave me something to start with.

A doodled map using the squares of squared paper to set the structure. Doodles in spaces between roads include geometric patterns, a river, trees and some sheep.

Data

  • My own imagination.

Tools used

  • A black fine-liner pen and a sheet of squared paper.

What did I learn?

That I really can’t draw, but this was quite fun once I stopped judging myself! I might do more for my own amusement.

What could I do differently or want to find out?

  • Learn to draw… No, just learn to judge myself less.
  • Next time maybe add the zebra frame first, might be neater! Though that assumes I know how big it’s going to be before I draw it.
  • Might try a map of a real place like this - Bishop’s Castle might work quite well!

Process (more detail about how I made the map)

Not a lot to say. Started with the upper roundabout and just sort of added things from there. Roads first, then filled in the gaps. At end added the zebra map frame and text.
