RGB hillshade with Relief Visualisation Toolbox
The idea for this map came from a blog about long barrows by the Avon Valley Archaeological Society.
Bury Ditches Hillfort, South Shropshire.
Data
- Data is 1m Lidar DTM from Defra download page.
- Data acknowledgement for Lidar data -
Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0.
Tools I used
- QGIS to merge lidar data then clip to required area.
- Relief Visualisation Toolbox which I’d not used before.
What did I learn?
- Learnt about Lidar data with 3 directional hillshade - as shown on the NLS website. They say “This multi-direction hillshade has the effect of picking out minor landscape features more clearly than a single direction hillshade.”
What do I want to do next?
- QGIS has a plugin for RVT so I’d like to try that as well as the stand-alone version.
- I need to find out more detail about RVT so I possibly have more control over results.
- I’d like to see what some other local hillforts look like with RGB hillshade.
- Might be worth comparing this with effect of single direction hillshade.
- Create a layout with multiple images for a variety of hillforts - but which ones? There are too many for a single page.
